about the artist, Katherine Owen
“Wild Extravagant Livers of Life” pottery is designed and created by me, Katherine Owen. I never really knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. In high school I remember taking a test that was supposed to tell you, based on skill and interest, what types of careers you were suited for. Considering I’d always done very well in school, I was surprised to see the results. They were very vague--nothing stood out, although it did suggest that I could become a hair dresser. Tests like this can be helpful a lot of times, but other times they aren’t. That’s okay. God can lead you where you need to go even when the tests fail.
As a senior at William and Mary, I still didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I recognized that I needed some direction. In time I felt the call toward Christian Education and a master’s degree at Duke Divinity School. Following that wonderful experience, I worked in a United Methodist Church for a number of years.
After a while, I started to feel a real call to explore my artistic/creative gifts. I took one art class at Converse College and ended up with a BFA and a love for pottery and design. At one point, I realized that I could become a professional potter and now I spend my days, covered with clay, at my potter’s wheel in my garage.
In addition to making pots, I recently began crafting sterling silver wire and bead jewelry. Working with the malleable, yet hard wire is a great contrast to working with the soft, elastic clay.
I’m thankful to be where I am in my life. I’m able to express myself creatively, to share my “wild extravagant livers of life” pottery and my jewelry with others. I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, but for now I’m happy being a potter and dreamer.
